Frequently asked QUESTIONS ABOUT BOTOX (R)

Botox is a brand name for a prescription only medicine known generically as botulinum toxin type A, which is a neurotoxin. As well as having uses in a variety of medical applications, including the treatment of hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating which we can also treat, it is more commonly known as a cosmetic, anti-wrinkle treatment.

Botox is injected into specific areas of the face, in very small doses or units, to target the activity of certain muscles.

It is used to treat so called dynamic wrinkles. These are wrinkles which are created through repeated facial movement and expressions such as frowning, raising your eyebrows or smiling, whereby you crease up your eyes. By targeting the muscles which are used in the face to make these movements, their strength can be reduced by the action of the neurotoxin, and the movement relaxed. This allows the overlying skin to recover as it is not being constantly creased. The reduction in muscle movement wears off again over time, so needs to be repeated.

Botox is a licensed medicine in the UK for the treatment of vertical frown lines between the eyebrows (known as glabellar lines), crow’s feet (lateral canthal lines) and forehead lines in adults. If such lines bother you then we can discuss prescribing and using this treatment for you.

Your suitability for anti-wrinkle treatment with botulinum toxin (Botox) will be determined during a face-to-face consultation with one of our independent nurse prescribers where we will discuss your desires and expectations from treatment, and the various anti-wrinkle options available to you, including Botox. A full medical history will be taken to determine if there are any health concerns or medication which means that you are not suitable for treatment. A variety of options to treat lines and wrinkles will be discussed during your consultation.

Pregnant and breast-feeding women are not suitable for this treatment.

The use of Botox had a long history and safety record in both medical and cosmetic use.

All anti-wrinkle injectable treatments, including botulinum toxins are performed by our registered nurses. Botox treatment would be given following an appointment for a face-to-face consultation with one of our prescribing nurses. If it is determined that Botox is the most appropriate treatment for you, then the prescription will be ordered and dispensed and you will return for a subsequent appointment for the treatment.

Botox is injected using very fine needles, the same kind used daily by diabetic patients, so you are unlikely to feel very much during treatment. Nervous or needle-phobic patients may wish to opt for the application of a topical anaesthetic or numbing cream prior to treatment, but in most cases, this is not required.

Botox treatment allows men and women to achieve a more youthful and smoother facial appearance with just a few strategic anti-wrinkle injections. It has grown to become the top facial treatment for reducing the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles. Botox is the short form name for botulinum toxin, which is a neurotoxin produced by the Clostridium Botulin bacteria.

Ever since the FDA approved the use of botulinum toxin in the 1980s, it has become a popular remedy for signs of ageing like crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles. By delivering the botulinum toxin into these specific areas, the muscles underneath can relax and allow the lines to soften and disappear, leaving the person looking refreshingly youthful.

These aesthetic treatments can take less than 15 minutes, with the effect becoming visible within a few days and lasting up to about 3-4 months. The botulinum toxin is delivered through tiny painless injections from very fine needles that can even allow you to return to work immediately, ensuring your day is hardly disrupted simply for a cosmetic procedure

Dermal fillers are another of the effective injectable treatments for the face that help to get rid of lines and wrinkles.

When Botox anti wrinkle injections are administered, they block certain chemical signals from the nerves that cause facial muscles to contract and freeze up. As the muscles become unable to move, the wrinkles begin to soften in appearance and it prevents more wrinkles from developing.

The effect of the injections can be seen within a few days and last for up to 3-4 months before repeat treatments are required. Optimal results are achieved in a few weeks.

They are effective antiwrinkle injections for softening frown lines that appear mostly on the upper half of the face, on the forehead and around the eyes. This can result in more smoothened forehead lines, reduction in frown lines and fading of eye lines.

The injections can also be used to slim down the jawline and elevate the jowls. They can also help people that suffer from hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating, migraines and overactive bladder.

Botox is considered a safe cosmetic treatment in the UK when properly administered. This means that patients need only be careful to ensure they are receiving the treatment from a properly qualified medical

Though generally considered safe, there are some minor risks associated with the treatment. These include:

  • Mild headache and flu-like symptoms for about 24 hours after the injections
  • Some redness, bruising and swelling around the area where the injections were administered
  • Temporary weakness or droopiness in some surrounding areas where the injections were administered
  • Temporary weakness or droopiness in some surrounding areas where the injections were administered

These effects do not always occur and if they do, they do not tend to last long.

You can return to your normal activities immediately following anti-wrinkle or Botox treatment and will not need to take time of work.

Botulinum toxin takes approximately a week to ten days to start to work before there is a noticeable reduction in muscle activity. During this time, you may experience a tightness, tingling or odd sensation in the area treated.

A review appointment will be arranged two weeks after your initial treatment to establish how well the muscle relaxing has worked and if additional treatment is required.

You may experience a small amount of redness, itchiness or discomfort at the injection sites, immediately after treatment, and should avoid rubbing or scratching as this can introduce infection.

Some people experience a similar side effect to a headache, with a feeling of tightness, in the first 24-72 hours after Botox treatment as the neurotoxin starts to work.

Side effects or complications from botulinum toxin treatment are rare but can include something known as ptosis, whereby the eyebrow or eyelid can appear droopy or weak, approximately a week or two after treatment. Despite being a nuisance, and often unavoidable, this will disappear as the effect of the botulinum toxin wears off, returning to normal after a few months.

The effects of Botox treatment last approximately 4 to 6 months, depending on the individual and the area treated so repeat treatments will be required to maintain the reduction in muscle movement and the improvements in the overlying skin where visible lines and wrinkles will disappear over time.

The price for anti-wrinkle treatments will depend on the number of areas (frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet) being treated in a single session. Men usually required more Botox than women so there is an increased cost for men.

Consultations are available to discuss treatments for lines and wrinkles, including botulinum toxin with one of our independent nurse prescribers. If you are interested in discussing Botox treatment and want to know more, please book an appointment.

The botulinum toxin is diluted in saline before being prepared as an injection to be administered using very fine needles. Before the treatment, you will have a chance to ask the doctor any questions you have. Once you are comfortable and ready to proceed, the doctor will make several small injections of the Botox solution into the targeted areas.

You may be asked to make certain facial expressions so the doctor can better identify the best areas to administer the injections. The treatment will take less than 15 minutes.

Although it is an injection made into the skin, the fine needles rarely cause pain, with most patients reporting a small pinching sensation. This minimal discomfort makes it possible for them to return to work immediately.

The effect of the injections can last about 3-4 months before repeat treatment is required. It is however not advised to have further injections before 3 months are over as it may lead to the treatment becoming ineffective.

Dermal fillers are another injectable treatment that helps to fill out lines and wrinkles, giving the patient a smoother and more youthful appearance. They can also add some volume to soft tissue areas like around the lips, eye, and cheek areas. The fillers are primarily made up of a gel called hyaluronic acid. They are a popular alternative to Botox treatment with the effects lasting as long as up to 18 months.

As we age, our bodies produce less collagen and elastin. These are proteins that contribute to our youthful appearance. These fillers can be used to add volume that has been lost in facial areas due to a fall in the production of collagen and elastin in the body. They provide a natural-looking lift.

In some ways, Botox and dermal fillers are quite similar. They both help to eliminate the appearance of wrinkles and lines, resulting in a smoother and more youthful appearance. They are also both minimally invasive as they require just a few injections using fine needles.

Fillers are a better option for static and smile lines that are more likely caused by sagging in the lower face. Just as the name suggests, these fillers work by filling up the lost volume in soft tissues. Botox works by blocking nerve signals to the muscles, causing them to freeze up and soften the appearance of wrinkles.

So, while both anti-wrinkle treatments can be effective, they are used to treat lines of different types. The longevity of the treatments also differs greatly as the effect of fillers can last many months more than Botox.

It is not possible to say one treatment is better than the other as they are both used to address different causes of what may appear to be the same surface problem. The best way to determine the most appropriate treatment for your problem is to have a Botox consultation at our Ciao Bella Aesthetics clinic with a qualified practitioner who will be able to assess the condition of your facial skin and offer advice on which choice of anti-wrinkle treatment would be the best suited.

1. Youthful appearance – With the right treatment, you can achieve a more youthful appearance at minimal cost, without invasive cosmetic surgery and little discomfort. This improvement in appearance can also benefit mental health as it relieves feelings of depression associated with ageing and loss of confidence.

2. Minimally invasive treatments – These treatments are minimally invasive as they are administered using a few strategic injections from fine needles. The injections are not painful but can make for a small pinching sensation. Patients can go straight back to work afterwards.

3. Quick results – With Botox you can see the desired effect in a matter of days as your face become more relaxed and the results natural-looking. Similar effects are gained from fillers. Both offer a faster result than other non-invasive treatments like the use of creams.

4. Non-permanent results – Unlike cosmetic surgeries whose effects are permanent unless you opt to go under the knife again, these anti-wrinkle treatments are non-permanent. The effects do wear off with time, which is a benefit for any that prefer the option of either returning to their natural appearance or having the injections administered again to restore their youthful look. Though fillers after the initial treatment can last up to 18 months, their effects can be quickly reversed by the use of an enzyme called Vitrase.
