Tips to reduce swelling and bruising with fillers

The main complications that comes hand in hand with fillers is bruising and swelling.

In clinic you will hear us telling you all this information, most of it is on the aftercare card. But if you’re like me and in those situations, I get serious baby brain.

So, I thought I’d take some time to give you some tips on how to reduce filler related bruising and swelling.

Arnicare

Can be bought from any chemist or supermarket. It comes in both cream and tablet form.

If you are prone to bruising, I would advise taking the tablets two days before treatment then for a few days after – it has been proven that this can significantly reduce bruising.

If you see a bruise appearing or we can notice one in clinic after treatment then the cream or tablets can help reduce the bruising.

Pineapple

Would you believe it, but eating pineapple can help.

It contains an enzyme called bromelain which is known to have inflammatory properties to help reduce bruising and swelling.

This can be eaten a couple of days before your procedure, on the day and after your procedure. But remember it has to be fresh pineapple for it to work.

Medication and supplements

There are certain medication and supplements that should be avoided up to 2 weeks before any procedure as they increase your changes of bruising. As listed below

NSAIDS such as aspirin, ibuprofen, aleve, mortin ect.

St johns wort, vitamin E, krill oil, fish oil, flaxseed oils, omega 3, gingko, ginseng, garlic and glucosamine.

Ice

Get a nice cold compress on the treated area that day/night, this will help to reduce swelling.

Anti-histamine

If you want to reduce that swelling, take some anti-histamine just remember to take the non-drowsy ones if its in the day.

Alcohol

Unfortunately, alcohol causes are blood vessels to dilate which can cause more bleeding and bruising.

To reduce it, don’t drink alcohol 24 hours before the procedure and the same after.

Exercise

Now sometimes we all need an excuse not to go to the gym and this is the right one. Strenuous exercise should be avoided after the procedure as it causes the blood vessels to dilate which will cause more bruising and swelling.

I hope this helps, just remember its not something to worry about. It will resolve from anything from a couple of days to a couple of weeks, but if these tips are followed it will help reduce the appearance of bruising and swelling.
