Understanding Lip Fillers

Frequently asked QUESTIONS LIP FILLERS

The lip fillers that we use at Ciao Bella are made from hyaluronic acid or HA. HA is also a natural component of our own skin which we produce and metabolise daily; think of it like the body’s built in moisturiser. It attracts water to our skin, and this is what gives us plump, youthful-looking skin. Sadly though, as we age, we simply don’t produce as much natural HA ourselves so skin can appear lacklustre and we start to notice lines and wrinkles and skin sagging, which is also due to a slow down in the production of new collagen and elastin in the skin as we get older.

By using injectable products with hyaluronic acid which has been scientifically created into thicker gels so they last anywhere from 3 to 12 months, depending on the brand and type of product used in specific areas, we can put back lost HA, strengthen the skin, rehydrate it and restore that youthful appearance.

Using HA-based lip fillers, we can add volume back to the face, recontour areas and enhance features. During your consultation we can discuss the differences between the product ranges offered by Restylane® and Juvéderm® and advise on the best product choices for the area being treated.

At Ciao Bella we offer the 8-point non-surgical face lift using Juvéderm® fillers, tear trough treatment to improve the under-eye area and dark circles, lip enhancement, plumping and augmentation, non-surgical nose jobs or rhinoplasty, facial contouring of the cheeks, chin and jawline, as well as skin strengthening and hydration using skin booster products.

Your suitability for lip fillers will be determined during a free consultation with one of our registered nurses and injectable specialists where we will discuss your desires and expectations from treatment. A full medical history will also be taken to determine if there are any health concerns or medication which mean that you are not suitable for treatment. We take before and after photographs as well so that we can track the progress and outcomes of your treatment.

Pregnant and breast-feeding women are not suitable for this treatment.

If you have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid, you will also not be suitable for lip filler treatment with the products that we use.

We use filler products from the Restylane brand, including Skin Boosters, plus the Juvéderm brand, including ULTRA and Voluma, Volift and Volbella from the Juvéderm Vycross range. All these products have a long history of use in Europe and the USA so you can be assured of their safety profile and a multitude of clinical studies to back up their effectiveness.

All our cosmetic injectable treatments are performed by our qualified team of three registered nurses, two of whom are also independent nurse prescribers who can provide the required clinical prescribing should an emergency or complication arise. At Ciao Bella, we feel that it is important to emphasise the fact that we operate from a medically-led clinic who have the skills, training and experience to provide medical aesthetic treatments such as lip fillers.

All the products that we use also contain 3% lidocaine which is a local anaesthetic product, the same thing that you may receive when you visit the dentist for a filling. This means that as we inject the lip fillers, the local anaesthetic is also injected so there is minimal to no pain or discomfort during treatment. For nervous or needle-phobic patients we can also top this up with a topical anaesthetic or numbing cream which is applied a short while before we start treatment.

Depending on the treatment being undertaken, we also sometimes use blunt micro-cannulas instead of needles which can offer a less painful treatment for larger areas or lips.

As part of the ageing process, our lips tend to lose volume and appear thinner. People have become increasingly concerned about their facial appearance, especially with the sharp rise in taking photographs known as selfies and increased obsession with celebrities.

For most people, cosmetic surgery is either too costly or invasive an option, hence the growing popularity of lip fillers that are a minimally invasive way to improve the shape and pout of the lips. Our Ciao Bella Aesthetics clinic in Bristol offers this cosmetic treatment as a way to achieve a fuller and more defined lip shape.

For anyone considering lip fillers but who wants to know more about how this treatment is carried out, we will endeavour to help you find the answers you need. Let us start by delving into what lip fillers are and how this treatment works.

Lip fillers are an injectable treatment that adds volume to the lip area and can also be used to fill lines and wrinkles that come from ageing. These injections are made of a volume-enhancing solution. The most popular options are those made from hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid a naturally occurring substance that is typically found in the fluids in our joints and eyes is also produced in the body to cushion and lubricate joints and tissues. It also helps to keep skin moisturised and softened. It can also help to add volume. Earlier, collagen fillers were the norm, but have since become less popular as hyaluronic acid fillers were found to have a longer-lasting effect.

Once injected, lip fillers add volume and plumpness that gives a more youthful and vibrant appearance. The lips appear to have a more distinct shape and elasticity that makes patients feel more confident and happier in their appearance. The injections of dermal fillers are minimally invasive, with treatment done in a matter of minutes.

There are both permanent and temporary fillers in the market. However, temporary fillers are more popular and considered the safer option. Their effect can last anywhere between four to eight months before top-up treatment is required.

If you no longer want further treatment, you can simply allow the hyaluronic acid to biodegrade naturally in your body. If you want faster removal of the fillers, then an enzyme called Hyalase can be used to speed up this breakdown and cause the acid to naturally dissolve faster.

Both the filler and any injection for reversal should be administered by a qualified aesthetic practitioner, who you can find at our Bristol clinic.

Lip filler treatment is a safe and non-invasive way to increase lip volume and improve lip shape. This lip enhancement procedure can take about 20 minutes and is mostly painless. This is due to a local anaesthetic being incorporated into the first injections. This helps to numb the lips and ensure a more comfortable experience for the patient going forward.

Where the patient may be still concerned about pain from the initial injection, a numbing cream may be applied so that the entire treatment is pain-free. Ice packs are applied after the procedure to help minimise swelling and bruising. However, the swelling and bruising may still worsen the next day but go down thereafter.

You can begin to see the desired results of the treatment within the first two days. Optimal results should be evident about two weeks after the procedure.

Strategic injections are made using ultra fine needles to help plump up the lips and give them better contouring. Before the injections start, the practitioner will first clean the lip area. He will then apply a topical anaesthetic if needed to help numb the area in preparation for the first injection of dermal fillers. The syringes will have been prepared with a predetermined amount of filler. The injections are administered in small amounts through the ultra-fine needles.

When correctly done, the results should be natural looking and the lips should not feel any different to the patient than their natural lips.

The amount of lip filler used will vary from person to person. People tend to have varying levels of thinness in the lips and different expectations when it comes to the desired outcome of a cosmetic treatment they are undergoing.

A qualified practitioner will typically administer no more than 1ml of dermal filler to a patient per session. If more than this is required, the patient will be booked for a return appointment until we have helped them achieve their desired look. For those with particularly thin lips, this may require even three sessions. this careful application will help avoid the possible outcome of duck lips.

For those with minor issues and may just want to correct a minor imbalance in shape, less than one syringe may be sufficient. During your consultation with the practitioner, you will be advised on what amount is most suitable for your situation and the results you can expect to achieve.

You should expect some mild swelling after a lip filler treatment, particularly in the lips, which will disappear after 24-72 hours. There may be a small amount of bruising at the points of needle entry. You can return to your normal activities immediately following treatment and will not need to take time off work. You will be given advice on appropriate aftercare to avoid the risk of side effects.

Side effects and complications from dermal fillers are not common but can include infections or allergic reactions, characterised by swelling or the formation of lumps, called nodules or granulomas. Should you experience any side effects post-treatment, immediately or delayed, our teams of nurses follow established protocols for complication management which means that we can prescribe appropriate medication and dissolve the hyaluronic acid filler in the event of a problem.

Hyaluronic acid is eventually metabolised naturally by your body so you will require repeat treatments to maintain the results achieved. Depending on the area treated and the type of product used, dermal fillers can last between 3 and 12 months before a repeat is recommended. Most treatments require maintenance every 6 months to make sure that the correction is optimal.

The price of lip fillers will depend on the area being treated and the quantity (mls) of hyaluronic acid product required to achieve the desired results.

Consultations are available to discuss dermal filler treatment with one of our registered nurses. If you are interested in this treatment and want to know more, please book an appointment.

The level of hyaluronic acid in the body declines as we age. This makes it more likely to see older people seeking lip fillers as their lips thin. However, many young people naturally have thin lips that could benefit from enhancement using lip fillers.

So, adults of any age can take advantage of this treatment and achieve natural looking results when administered by a talented and qualified practitioner or doctor. They need to have a good eye for understanding how to strategically administer the injections and the correct quantity so the results will complement your facial anatomy.

Note that fillers can be used on more than just your lips. They can also be used to smoothen out lines and wrinkles on the skin around the lips. They can also be used to add volume and lift cheeks, the jawline and jowls. They can also be used to reshape the nose and reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.

  • Improved appearance – By adding volume and definition to the lip area, patients can feel more attractive and confident in their appearance. In many cases, even this simple cosmetic improvement can be a great mental boost. They can not only be used to enhance the appearance of lips but also smoothen smokers’ lines and wrinkles on the skin around the mouth.
  • Non-invasive cosmetic procedure – Lip fillers can make for a cosmetic change without needing to have surgery. They just involve injections beneath the skin that are painlessly administered thanks to the use of topical anaesthetics and anaesthetic incorporated into the filler substance.
  • Quick results – Within just two days you will have seen a marked improvement in the shape and plumpness of your lips. Once the swelling has gone down completely, you will have better-looking lips whose results will last you several more months.
  • Safety – Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in our bodies. This makes the injectable form used in fillers well suited to their purpose and unlikely to be rejected by the body. At Ciao Bella Aesthetics clinic in Bristol, we only use the highest quality lip filler injections that are CE approved. You also help improve your chances of success and safety by choosing to have treatments done by a qualified practitioner.

Keep in mind that lip filler treatments are typically a temporary solution. They are however a safe lip enhancement and can provide effective results when done by a fully qualified practitioner. Arrange for a consultation during which you can ask any questions you may have about the dermal filler procedure and your suitability for the treatment.

We will assess your lip concerns and discuss what treatment options are available to you. It is also important that we go over your medical history to ensure this treatment is suitable for you. We will also go into detail as to how the procedure will be done, likely outcomes, expected recovery time, and cost.

Generally, lip fillers are considered safe when appropriately administered by a qualified and experienced practitioner. There could however be some effects you should be aware of. When the first injection is being administered, you may feel a slight pinch or discomfort. Especially if there is no numbing cream that was applied.

If you want a pain-free experience, you should discuss the use of a topical anaesthetic before the procedure. The injections already include some anaesthetic which should make further injections feel painless.

Immediately after being treated, you will likely experience some skin redness, swelling and bruising. This is normal as the lips tend to have thin skin and are full of blood vessels. You will be provided with an ice pack to help soothe these symptoms, however, by the next day, they will likely emerge again. This will however resolve in subsequent days, with optimal results from the dermal fillers achieved within two weeks. Also, try to avoid rubbing, exposure to food that is too hot or cold, excessive sun exposure, steam or solariums for at least a week after treatments.

The injections will cause your lips and the surrounding area to swell up and redden. You will be provided with an ice pack to apply to the area and soothe these symptoms. However, these symptoms may flare up the next day and take several days to fade.

You will be advised to avoid anything that could cause your lips to swell up and redden until the symptoms have receded. This means being as gentle as possible around that area, and avoiding touching or rubbing that could irritate. Even the use of lip balm or lipstick should be avoided for at least 12 hours thereafter. Also, try to keep off foods or drinks that are of extreme temperatures.

At the Ciao Bella Aesthetics clinic in Bristol, we will also arrange for a post-treatment appointment where we will review the results of the treatment to see if you are happy. This will ensure that the treatment has proven successful and if there is any need to make adjustments for future top-up treatments.

As said, there are temporary and permanent lip fillers. Permanent lip fillers are not recommended as they can often have complications that are difficult to treat and their removal is more invasive.

Temporary lip fillers can last anywhere between four to eight months, depending on the amount of filler administered during treatments and the individual’s lip condition. If you feel your lips are losing their plumpness and shape by this time, you can revisit our Bristol clinic to have a top-up treatment.

If you decide not to have the treatment again, the remaining hyaluronic acid will dissipate as it is biodegradable in the skin.
