Frequently asked QUESTIONS ABOUT BOTOX (R)
Botox is a brand name for a prescription only medicine known generically as botulinum toxin type A, which is a neurotoxin. As well as having uses in a variety of medical applications, including the treatment of hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating which we can also treat, it is more commonly known as a cosmetic, anti-wrinkle treatment.
Botox is injected into specific areas of the face, in very small doses or units, to target the activity of certain muscles.
It is used to treat so called dynamic wrinkles. These are wrinkles which are created through repeated facial movement and expressions such as frowning, raising your eyebrows or smiling, whereby you crease up your eyes. By targeting the muscles which are used in the face to make these movements, their strength can be reduced by the action of the neurotoxin, and the movement relaxed. This allows the overlying skin to recover as it is not being constantly creased. The reduction in muscle movement wears off again over time, so needs to be repeated.
Botox is a licensed medicine in the UK for the treatment of vertical frown lines between the eyebrows (known as glabellar lines), crow’s feet (lateral canthal lines) and forehead lines in adults. If such lines bother you then we can discuss prescribing and using this treatment for you.
Your suitability for anti-wrinkle treatment with botulinum toxin (Botox) will be determined during a face-to-face consultation with one of our independent nurse prescribers where we will discuss your desires and expectations from treatment, and the various anti-wrinkle options available to you, including Botox. A full medical history will be taken to determine if there are any health concerns or medication which means that you are not suitable for treatment. A variety of options to treat lines and wrinkles will be discussed during your consultation.
Pregnant and breast-feeding women are not suitable for this treatment.
The use of Botox had a long history and safety record in both medical and cosmetic use.
All anti-wrinkle injectable treatments, including botulinum toxins are performed by our registered nurses. Botox treatment would be given following an appointment for a face-to-face consultation with one of our prescribing nurses. If it is determined that Botox is the most appropriate treatment for you, then the prescription will be ordered and dispensed and you will return for a subsequent appointment for the treatment.
Botox is injected using very fine needles, the same kind used daily by diabetic patients, so you are unlikely to feel very much during treatment. Nervous or needle-phobic patients may wish to opt for the application of a topical anaesthetic or numbing cream prior to treatment, but in most cases, this is not required.
You can return to your normal activities immediately following anti-wrinkle or Botox treatment and will not need to take time of work.
Botulinum toxin takes approximately a week to ten days to start to work before there is a noticeable reduction in muscle activity. During this time, you may experience a tightness, tingling or odd sensation in the area treated.
A review appointment will be arranged two weeks after your initial treatment to establish how well the muscle relaxing has worked and if additional treatment is required.
You may experience a small amount of redness, itchiness or discomfort at the injection sites, immediately after treatment, and should avoid rubbing or scratching as this can introduce infection.
Some people experience a similar side effect to a headache, with a feeling of tightness, in the first 24-72 hours after Botox treatment as the neurotoxin starts to work.
Side effects or complications from botulinum toxin treatment are rare but can include something known as ptosis, whereby the eyebrow or eyelid can appear droopy or weak, approximately a week or two after treatment. Despite being a nuisance, and often unavoidable, this will disappear as the effect of the botulinum toxin wears off, returning to normal after a few months.
The effects of Botox treatment last approximately 4 to 6 months, depending on the individual and the area treated so repeat treatments will be required to maintain the reduction in muscle movement and the improvements in the overlying skin where visible lines and wrinkles will disappear over time.
The price for anti-wrinkle treatments will depend on the number of areas (frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet) being treated in a single session. Men usually required more Botox than women so there is an increased cost for men.
Consultations are available to discuss treatments for lines and wrinkles, including botulinum toxin with one of our independent nurse prescribers. If you are interested in discussing Botox treatment and want to know more, please book an appointment.
